Anglia wins Cree SiC power product line

Anglia Components has been appointed as UK distributor for Cree Silicon Carbide power MOSFET and Schottky Diode devices. The line complements Anglia’s strong analogue franchise portfolio, which already includes Analog Devices, Intersil and STMicroelectronics.

Commenting, Anglia Components Marketing Director, Semiconductors, John Bowman, said, “Cree MOSFETs and Schottky diodes use the market leading Cree Silicon Carbide technology (SiC). This enables higher voltage, faster switching speed and better efficiency than traditional MOSFETs and Schottky diodes which are based on Silicon technology. Cree strengthens our offering at the higher power end of the market, and allows us to provide solutions for customers in the renewable energy and motor control fields especially.”

The superior performance of silicon carbide makes devices more efficient than similar products using silicon. Specifically, it offers ten times the breakdown field of standard silicon, giving lower specific on-resistance and faster switching at the same breakdown voltage. It also has three times the thermal conductivity of silicon, allowing higher current densities, and three times the bandgap, for higher temperature operation.

Nick Bourne, power specialist within Anglia’s Field Applications Engineering team, pointed out that, “The use of a more energy efficient technology like SiC not only reduces the operating cost of the end product, but also simplifies thermal management, as it reduces the waste heat generated in a design. Typical applications include renewable energy conversion, electric vehicles, industrial inverters, battery chargers and welding equipment.”

Anglia Lighting will continue to distribute Cree LED devices in the UK.
