KEMET expands C0G and X8R flexible termination portfolio

The KEMET Corporation has announced the expansion of its Flexible Termination (FT-CAP) product portfolio in C0G and Ultra-Stable X8R dielectrics. The company has extended case size offerings as well as capacitance values in both dielectric platforms.

C0G and Ultra-Stable X8R capacitors with flexible termination are able to outperform devices with standard termination systems and as such are suited for critical and safety relevant circuits without (integrated) current limitation, as well as any application that is subject to high levels of board flexure or temperature cycling. These devices are RoHS Compliant and available with an optional tin-lead finish. In addition to Commercial Grade, Automotive Grade (AEC-Q200) devices are available for mission and safety critical circuits requiring stricter testing protocol and inspection criteria.

“KEMET’s C0G-type multilayer ceramic capacitors offer industry-leading performance and exceptional capacitance stability up to 125°C,” stated Dr. Abhijit Gurav, KEMET Vice President, Ceramic Technology. “Combined with superior flex performance, Ultra-Stable X8R devices are ideal for use at high temperatures up to 150°C in higher reliability applications such as down-hole drilling and engine compartments.”

Flexible termination technology was developed in order to address flex cracks, the primary industry failure mode of surface mount MLCCs. This technology directs circuit board stress away from the ceramic body and into the termination area, thereby reducing the risk of mechanical damage to the component that can result in low IR or short circuit failures.

FT-CAP complements KEMET’s Open Mode, Floating Electrode (FE-CAP), Floating Electrode with Flexible Termination (FF-CAP), and KEMET Power Solutions (KPS) product lines by providing a complete portfolio of flex mitigation solutions.
