Vishay Intertechnology’s 5 A synchronous buck regulator offers switching frequencies up to 4 MHz

Vishay Intertechnology has expanded its microBUCK family of integrated synchronous buck regulators with a new 5 A device offering high programmable switching frequencies to 4 MHz. The Vishay Siliconix SiP12108 features integrated high- and low-side power MOSFETs in the space-saving 3 mm by 3 mm QFN-16 package, providing designers with a complete high-current solution in only 180 mm².

The high switching frequencies of the SiP12108 enable a compact design with minimal components, making the device suitable for point of load regulation and 3.3 V and 5 V rails in a wide range of space-constrained computing, consumer electronics, telecom, and industrial applications. Typical end products will include low-power processors, network processors, DSPs, FPGAs, ASICs, high-density storage cards, set-top boxes, DVRs, LAN/WAN equipment, and more.

The device provides an input voltage range of 2.8 V to 5.5 V and adjustable output voltage down to 0.6 V with ± 1 % accuracy while a selectable power-saving mode enables efficiency to 95 % across the full range of load current. The SiP12108″s current-mode constant on-time (CM-COT) architecture delivers ultra-fast transient response with minimum output capacitance and tight ripple regulation at very light loads.

The SiP12108 also offers a full protection feature set, including output undervoltage and overvoltage protection, thermal shutdown, input undervoltage lockout, internal soft start, and a power good indicator. An “A” version of the device, the SiP12108A, is available with the output undervoltage protection feature disabled. To simplify designs, the RoHS-compliant, halogen-free regulator is stable with any capacitor type and doesn”t require an ESR network for loop stability.

Offering an easy migration path to higher currents, the SiP12108 is footprint-compatible with Vishay”s 3 A SiP12107. The company”s free PowerCAD online simulation tool provides designers with a fast and convenient way to test and optimize circuits utilizing the SiP12107, SiP12108, SiP12108A, or any other product in the microBUCK DC/DC family.
