Add USB C power with USB-C Sink 5 Click board from MIKROE
Suits wearables, mobile gadgets high-end instruments and legacy retrofits
USB-C Sink 5 Click from MIKROE, the embedded solutions company that aims to cut development time by providing hardware and software products based on proven standards, is a compact add-on Click board™ designed for USB Type-C Power Delivery sink applications, enabling embedded systems to receive, negotiate, and manage power from USB-C PD-capable sources. This board is based on the STUSB4531QTR, a standalone USB Type-C and USB Power Delivery sink controller from STMicroelectronics.
Commented Nebojsa Matic, CEO of MIKROE: “USB-C Sink 5 Click is perfect for wearables and mobile gadgets that need to draw power from modern USB-C chargers instead of traditional barrel jacks. It is suitable for high-end instruments and portable electronics requiring standard-compliant 5V to 20V power negotiation, and is ideal for replacing legacy DC power inputs with universal USB-C charging in field-deployed devices. This Click is also an excellent solution for retrofitting DC barrel or USB micro-B interfaces to support current USB-C power standards.”
Key features of the USB-C Sink 5 Click include: autonomous USB PD contract negotiation through Autorun mode; default PDO configuration stored in internal non-volatile memory; dead battery mode support; VBUS monitoring; input power path control; integrated protection and discharge functions; and high-voltage surge protection. The board communicates with the host MCU through an I2C interface with selectable addresses, provides an active-low open-drain interrupt, and includes high-voltage open-drain general-purpose outputs.
The mikroBUS™-enabled Click board family now numbers over 2000 compact add-on development boards that save design time and cost. USB-C Sink 5 Click also features the ClickID function which enables automatic identification by the host system, simplifying use. Devices can be used on any host system supporting the mikroBUS standard, and come with the mikroSDK open-source libraries, offering excellent flexibility for evaluation and customization. Hundreds of ready-to-use embedded projects featuring this Click board are available on EmbeddedWiki.
