Electronics Run Club: new initiative aims to bring the electronics industry together via running
Inclusive community group to organise runs alongside key European industry events – creating opportunities to network and raise money for charity
A Europe-wide running community has just been launched to help electronics industry professionals stay active, build valuable and long-lasting connections, plus support deserving charitable causes in the process. The Electronics Run Club (ERC) will organise inclusive group runs to coincide with major electronics trade shows and conferences throughout the year ahead – including Microelectronics UK in London, the Engineering Design Show (EDS) in Coventry, electronica in Munich, Southern Manufacturing & Electronics in Farnborough, embedded world in Nuremberg, Hardware Pioneers Max in London and PCIM Europe in Nuremberg, among others. Open to people of all abilities – from experienced runners to complete beginners – the ERC encourages participants to choose a pace that suits them, then get involved in post-run socialising afterwards. Outside of organised events, it will provide a year-round sporting social group where members can offer encouragement to each other, share useful training advice and even arrange local meet-ups. Upcoming short training runs:
– Sunday 6 September 11:30am – Reading – Starting at the Thames Lido, next to Reading train station – A comfortable 4-5km run (followed by drinks in a nearby pub).
– Wednesday 23 September 5:15pm – London – Starting outside the Horniman at Hays pub, next to the river in Hay’s Galleria, near London Bridge station. Gentle paced 3-4km (followed by drinks in the bar).
Trade show runs:

Nayl D’Souza, ERC Co-Founder and Club Director, explains: “Though trade shows are really great places to meet people, conversations during a relaxed run can be far more natural and easy-going than exchanging business cards at crowded exhibition stands. In addition, they bring a sense of belonging too. The ERC enables participants to get together in a fun and healthy way, getting better connected yet at the same time improving their fitness levels.”
“Crucially, ERC will give people the chance to make new connections and maintain stronger relationships at industry gatherings once the exhibition halls have closed. A lasting camaraderie will be one of the many benefits that those taking part are certain to enjoy,” adds Mark Gradwell, fellow ERC Co-Founder.
“This isn’t about being the fastest person on a run,” comments ERC Co-ordinator Amélie Burgess. “We simply want to offer a platform for our electronics industry colleagues to retain their fitness and return home feeling better connected and proud that they’re helping worthwhile causes.”
Mike Green, ERC Co-Founder, concludes: “We’ve already gained a great response from show organisers, industry bodies, companies and individuals alike. Almost straight away, organisers of several high-profile industry events approached us about partnering up. We hope to keep building on the widespread positive response received, making a vibrant and valued community that proves advantageous to all involved.”
Charitable fundraising will form an essential part of the work done by the ERC team, with supported causes being announced for individual events. In the longer term, it hopes to organise other activities such as walks, cycling trails and climbing sessions.
