image1 19Increasingly, space-constrained, high-density electronics systems are mandating a dramatic downsizing of their constituent components, in order to fit everything onto available board real estate. In many cases, there is also a need to keep the overall weight of the system to an absolute minimum. However, at the same time, there cannot be any compromise on the performance delivered or in relation to long-term reliability.

Presenting engineers with compact, ultra-lightweight connector technology that acknowledges this trend, the Gecko Screw-Lok (SL) series extends Harwin’s Gecko 1.25mm pitch portfolio, addressing applications where there are high degrees of vibrational force involved. These award-winning, low-profile components incorporate ruggedized, captive screws with hex heads to ensure that consistent and dependable operation is maintained even in the most challenging of environments. As a consequence, these advanced connector solutions are highly optimised for mission critical systems where failure needs to be avoided at all costs as it could lead to unwanted system downtime or even put lives in danger.

As well as enabling increased security compared to the original latched Gecko versions, these units also prevent slipping during the assembly process. The innovative ‘mate before lock’ mechanism that has been employed facilitates fast assembly and increased usability, with additional strain relief being supplied via the board mount fixings.

image21By relying on a patented single piece 4-finger beryllium copper construction, each Gecko contact is individually capable of carrying up to 2.8A of current (and 2.0A across all contacts simultaneously). As well as their high vibrational robustness (20g/2000Hz), these connectors can withstand severe shocks (100g 6m/s on Z axis) and intense acceleration (40g). They have an extensive temperature range (-65°C to +15°C) and their working lifespan supports 1,000 mating cycles.

As with all Gecko products, the Gecko SL offering is targeted at deployment in systems where there are size, weight and power (SWaP) considerations to take into account. These connectors are up to 45% smaller than conventional Micro-D products from other manufacturers and are up to 75% lighter, while still offering equivalent or better performance.

Their highly resilient stainless steel fixings can cope with exposure to salt spray and extreme humidity. Shielded options with machined aluminium backshells bring even greater electrical continuity and more effective EMI/RFI shielding. Among the key areas where Gecko SL is being regularly specified are unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), race cars and satellites/nanosatellites. They can be used in cable-to-board, board-to-board or cable-to-cable connection arrangements.
