Rohde & Schwarz has announced that its latest millimetre wave airport security scanner, the R&S QPS201, has been Highly Commended in the Transport Innovation of the Year category at the prestigious IET Innovation Awards presented in London. The R&S QPS201 also achieved Highly Commended at the Airport Operators Association (AOA) Awards in 2018. Edinburgh Airport and Rohde & Schwarz were named Best Solution Provider at these Awards for improving the passenger experience and security through the installation of R&S QPS200 scanners.
Frank Mackel, managing director at Rohde & Schwarz UK LTD, commented: “Being awarded as Highly Commended again for the QPS millimetre wave airport scanning technology is a clear demonstration of our leadership in this key field. Strong airport security is clearly essential to safe air travel – at Rohde & Schwarz our goal is to make it convenient and quick as well as super-effective. The accolades we are gaining shows that we are making great progress towards achieving all three goals.”
With twice the speed and a more compact footprint, the R&S QPS201 millimetre-wave security scanner heralds the second generation of privacy-assured full-body scanners for airports, capable of identifying threats including metallic or non-metallic objects such as liquids, plastic packages or ceramic blades. Security scanning of air passengers, using millimetre-wave scanners, has demonstrated high threat-detection capabilities. Authorities now plan mandatory 100 per cent passenger scanning, which could cause longer queues. The R&S QPS201 prevents this with next-generation processing architecture and software algorithms that can halve scan time to 2.5 seconds. Furthermore, the R&S QPS201 is optimised in footprint, reducing its width by 75cm whilst maintaining convenient passage even for wheelchair users.
